If your level of English is equivalent to the Cambridge Advanced (CAE) or Proficiency examinations (CPE) – Common European Framework Levels C1/C2 - you are invited to attend a Literature and Translation Course on Friday evenings from 16.30 to 18.15 or on Tuesday evenings from 17.15 to 19.00, beginning on Friday 26th November 2010 and Tuesday 30th November, respectively.
The course covers aspects of English not dealt with in our normal evening classes. It provides weekly practice in the skill of translating both fictional and non-fictional texts from German into English, and an opportunity for students to become familiar with, discuss and write essays on the novels, stories and plays of a variety of writers. The literary theme for the course commencing this autumn is entitled ‘The English Abroad'.
Course-participants are asked to read as preparation the following novels – available as a set at our reception as from 18th June - to be discussed in the order given below.

- The Flame Trees of Thika by Elspeth Huxley
- An Ice-Cream War by William Boyd
- Staying on by Paul Scott
- As I walked Out One Mid-Summer Morning by Laurie Lee
- Miss Garnet's Angel by Sally Vickers
- The course will be held on 22 evenings between November 2010 and July 2011. It is also possible to join the course once it has started. Please contact us for further details.
- Three or four course-evenings will be devoted to each of the above titles.
- It will be assumed that the course participant will have read each of the books by the first of the respective course evenings.
