Theme 2026/27:Welsh Writers and Poets 

Inexplicably, for the first time in the history of this unique Literature & Translation course, and it has been a long history, the six works to be read and discussed, during the six months of the course, are of Welsh writers.

Inexplicable, for Wales is a land of song, of theatre, of poetry. It is also a land of mountains, rivers and sea; it is a bastion that did not fall when the Normans invaded Britain in 1066. However, it is a land of mist and rain; of a melancholy that perpetrates the Welsh voice, Welsh writings and Welsh poetry.

Participants are asked to read the following books, which will be discussed in order:

1. W. H. Davies ‘The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp’
2. Edward Thomas ‘Selected Poems and Prose’
3. Jan Morris ‘Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere’
4. Owen Sheers ‘I Saw a Man’
5. Cynan Jones ‘The Long Dry’
6. Caryl Lewis ‘Drift’
